The Key to Keto Drinks
What is the Keto diet?
The Ketogenic diet is essentially a very low carb, high fat diet (sort of like the Atkins diet… but for millennials). It has become very popular in recent years, as studies have proved its many health benefits, and can even aid with weight-loss.
This low carb regimen puts your body into a metabolic state known as ‘ketosis’ – which means your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy for the brain. Read more on the keto diet here.
All pretty good right – but what we really want to know is whether you drink alcohol whilst on a keto diet? And which are the best alcoholic keto drinks?
Keto says no
Call yourself a keto warrior? Put that Pornstar Martini down!
It turns out that some of our favourite cocktails are literally dripping with sugar and carbs – crazy right? So if you fancy yourself a bit of a home mixologist, make sure you keep the added sugary ingredients to a minimum. We’ve made some of these lower-calorie cocktail ideas for you to try instead.
Sorry, but mixed drinks are also off the list (Rum & Coke, Vodka & Tonic etc.), due to their higher sugar content.
Sadly if you’re trying to cut the carbs – beer isn’t your friend either.
Tough right? Thankfully there are some good options out there for you, brave keto soldier.
The Best keto drinks
Wine (especially dry whites and reds) are naturally lower in carbs – with around 1g of carb per glass, so you can happily fit this into your daily goal of around 20g total carbs. And always make sure you’re sticking to the NHS’s guidelines to not drink more than 14 units per week.
Neat spirits like whisky, vodka or gin also contain no carbs, and so are another good keto drink option if that’s your thing. However, make sure you’re not mixing your drink with overly-sugary mixers or tonics. As this can be where the carbs really start to rack up – with the standard Gin & Tonic sometimes containing up to 15 carbs per serving!
The good news
You’ve probably guessed it by now. Containing no added carbs, and naturally low sugar levels, hard seltzers are a great option when having a drink on a keto diet.
All Long Shot hard seltzers have 2-2.8g grams of carbohydrate per can (all of which come from naturally occurring sugars found in our fruit juices), meaning they’re not going to throw your daily carb intake through the roof.
Many of our customers come from the keto community, as people understand that you don’t need to completely write alcohol out of your diet to play along, as long as you’re keeping an otherwise healthy and active lifestyle.
Tickled your fancy yet? Why not try out a Strawberry & Rhubarb hard seltzer 6-pack to start you off? It's recently awarded a Gold medal at the Spirits Masters Pre-Mixed Awards too, and it’s got your name all over it.
